There has been lots of hype in the last few years about how one little purple berry is the answer to all our weight loss problems. Celebrity endorsements, Internet advertising, and the appearance of acai berries in nearly every product in the grocery store have only added to the confusion. So what’s the truth about this intriguing berry? Is it a miracle-cure for obesity, or just another weight-loss myth?

Acai berries grow on Acai Palm trees throughout Central and South America. They’ve long been a staple of the indigenous people’s diets, and have recently been “discovered” by western science.

The basis for the hype that surrounds this blueberry-like fruit is that it is packed with immune-boosting antioxidants, the likes of which you can’t find anywhere else on earth. Antioxidants are an important part of a healthy eating plan. They’re like little riot police, putting a stop to all those hoodlums, the free radicals. Free radicals are to blame for everything from aging to cancer, so they need to be stopped.

What’s not so clear is if free radicals have much to do with weight gain, or the inability to shed those unwanted pounds. Free radicals come from things like fried foods, so there appears to be a correlation between them and weight gain. But free radicals are also caused by many other things, including respiration. So it’s unclear whether or not free radicals cause us to gain weight, or if it’s all that fried food we’re eating. Certainly, adding a few antioxidants to your diet can’t hurt, though. The question is, are acai berries the best foods for the job?

Well, acai berries are fairly bursting with antioxidants, but they’re not really any better source than locally grown blueberries or raspberries. In fact, they may even contain less antioxidants than black cherries. So if you really want to gain the benefits of all those antioxidants, grab a bottle of blueberry or cherry juice rather than acai berry juice. Your wallet will thank you.

But what about those super-concentrated acai berry supplements? Surely those are better for promoting weight loss than cherry juice? Not likely. Not only are nutritional supplements not regulated – and therefore not measured for effectiveness or even the presence of the very nutrient they claim to contain – but the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society have both stood out against taking supplements of this kind. The truth is, ingesting too many of these types of nutrients can be worse for your health than not taking any at all. In fact, some studies have shown that people who take antioxidant supplements are more likely to suffer a heart attack.

Are acai berries healthy? Certainly. So are all dark-colored fruits and vegetables, and you should absolutely add more of them to your diet. But it’s unrealistic to expect to lose weight simply because you ate some acai berry. Weight loss is a simple equation: burn more calories than you ingest. That means the only sure-fire way to lose weight is to eat less and move more.

Juice Detox Diet

The juice detox diet is a method of dieting and/or fasting designed to provide your vital organs and system a break from the hard work associated with breaking down and digesting solid foods. The diet involves drinking fresh, raw juices and can include the consumption of fresh produce while abstaining from the consumption of any other solid foods. The dieting may last from as few as 2 days to several weeks or months. This diet is not commercially sold but can instead be made from the comfort of your own kitchen.

Recent Developments

A lot of research has been done to look into the juice/detox diet as to whether it is nutritionally sound for use. The research has concluded that juice/detox diet is a perfect way of losing weight, keeping fit or basically fasting. The logic behind this is that fruits and vegetables contain all the substantial nutrients including vitamins, minerals, proteins and also carbohydrates. More importantly is that the detox diet cleans up your system from any toxins hence rejuvenates your body and reduces the amount of cholesterol that may at the time be contained in the body. A few days after you have started consuming juice/detox diet, you will realize that even your skin will start looking healthier and younger. Modern developers of juice/detox diet advice that you alternate between the juices and whole fruits, plus you should add one regular meal into your timetable and take multivitamins.

Best Practices

To take the full advantage of the juice/detox diet, you ought to balance between how much juice/detox diet you take and how much whole fruits, vegetables and water you take. You should only consume the juices up until noon and thereafter, eat a whole fruit of a serving of vegetables. These should be organic and are best consumed when fresh and frozen. You should also take as much water as possible preferably an amount corresponding with half of your total body weight, but in ounces. If for instance you weigh 110 pounds, you should consume 55 ounces of water.

Advantages and disadvantages

Some of the so called juice/detox diets have however been proven to lack the basic nutrients like iron, electrolytes and proteins hence may lead to starvation.

Long term use of juice/detox diet may slow down one’s metabolism hence make it harder for them to lose more weight at a later date.

Though the juice/detox diet is highly beneficial to a majority of people, it is not recommended to pregnant women, teenagers or people suffering from diabetes or other chronic diseases.

On the brighter side, juice/detox diet helps get rid of toxins in the body that may lead to dangerous diseases like cancer.

A juice detox diet can also gives an improved and more radiant complexion, increases the rates at which you losing weight, leads to lesser headaches and leads to lesser bloating.

Men call it their “beer gut.” Women sometimes call it their “post baby” fat. No matter what you call it, belly fat is not something anyone wants. Yet, is it possible to lose it?

The obvious answer is that a good eating program is going to help you lose weight, so there’s a good chance that you will lose belly fat as a result. If a change in your eating is the approach you decide to take, here are some dietary changes you may want to consider.

Eat oatmeal for breakfast. Because it’s fiber-rich, it will keep hunger away for hours. Just be sure to stay away from the flavored varieties.

If you prefer a heartier breakfast, have eggs. They contain Vitamin B12 that helps your body to metabolize fat. Talk to your doctor if you have a cholesterol issue before you start or increase your egg consumption, though.

Almonds and other nuts (except those that are salted) also help to keep away hunger. Just remember, a serving of nuts will fit in the palm of your hand. It’s easy to get carried away with these addicting snacks.

Fat – in the form of olive or canola oil – satisfies your cravings while at the same time helping to keep your cholesterol under control.

For more fiber, choose fresh berries such as strawberries, blueberries, etc.

Here comes the fiber again. This time it’s in the form of beans and legumes. Replace one meat meal a week with black or pinto beans and see the difference. Don’t forget cannellini beans which are slower to digest, causing your body to work harder (and burn more calories).

To burn the most calories, pick a lean meat protein over a carb or fat. The best choices are turkey, tuna, or salmon – which are full of Omega 3’s.

While no one can live without carbs, try to pick the good kinds such as whole grains. Look for the word “whole grain” or “100% whole wheat” on the label.

Now your old favorite PBJ may be out, but natural peanut butter isn’t. Packed with niacin, peanut butter keeps your digestive system on track by preventing bloating. Limit yourself to no more than 2 tablespoons a day.

Bring on the green veggies – especially those in the lettuce family. Romaine, arugula, and/or spinach are excellent choices. The one to bypass is iceberg because it has no fiber. Eat your green veggies before a meal and you’ll see a drop in your overall portion size.

Milk really does do a body good! The reason is that calcium helps break down fat. Of course, you’ll want to pick low-fat or fat-free.

Californians and Floridians love their avocados. This nutty fruit is full of fiber and heart-friendly monounsaturated fats. Add ½ cup to a salad or mix with tomatoes and onions for great guacamole!

Rich in antioxidants, green tea has been shown to speed up your metabolism. Forgo the bottled versions and, instead, steep fresh tea buds harvested in spring for the most benefit.

If you love cheese there’s nothing better than Parmigiano Reggiano. It is higher in protein than any other diary product, which means you’ll stay fuller longer.

Just a few simple changes in your diet can be just what your body needs to lose belly fat, putting you back on the road to a slim and trim figure.

Why My Child Has Autism?

What is autism?

A very well-known developmental disability, autism results from a neurological disorder that greatly affects the normal functions of the brain. Because of the disruption in how the brain should be normally wired, the development of an autistic person’s social interaction and communication skills are severely slowed down. People who suffer from this disability also have difficulty with non-verbal communication and activities that have to do with play and banter.

How is autism manifested?

Kids who have autism find it hard to express themselves using words. As a result, they retreat back to being alone and keeping to themselves since they cannot communicate with other people without someone’s help. Also, those with autism are observed to react to usual environmental phenomena in very unusual ways. For instance, what is perceived to be normal, common sounds may sound too bothersome for someone with autism, causing them to cover their ears. Also, certain tactile sensations may make a person with autism feel uncomfortable.

People with this disability have trouble establishing connections that normal people easily make. For instance, if one sees another person smile, it is generally perceived that the person is happy, friendly, or having fun. However, a person with autism may not be able to connect the smile with being happy or friendly.

Another difficulty for someone with autism is word-meaning associations. Autistic people find it hard to understand people who speak out words because in essence, they do not know what the words mean. This also makes it incredibly hard for them to express their own thoughts, since they cannot find the right words to represent how they feel at the moment they want to express themselves.

What causes autism?

1 in every 150 childrensuffer from autism, but its cause is unfortunately not known. Some scientists believe that autism is hereditary and that the probability of having an autistic child relies heavily on the family’s history with the disease. However, an exact cause remains to be discovered.

How do doctors deal with autism?

Diagnosing an autistic child starts with the parents reporting to the family physician that something is amiss with the way their child behaves. Initially, laboratory tests and other medical tests are performed in order to make sure that the initial suspicious symptoms are not those of another illness. When all lab tests come out clean and normal, they will then start to run group observations together with a team of child psychology, speech, and language professionals. The team will then conduct tests and observations under several simulated and natural conditions in order to arrive at a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis of whether or not a child has autism.

How is autism treated?

There is no known cure for peoplewho suffer from autism. The best that doctors and parents can do is come up with ways on how to help the child overcome daily difficulties or adjust to various social situations. These treatments may come in the form of communication therapies, speech classes, sign language, social skills, life and survival skills, and behavior control. Those with mild autism grow up and actually become independent enough to live on their own, but those with more serious cases will still need assistance in getting through their daily routines. With the help and understanding of doctors, parents, teachers, relatives, and friends, those with autism will still be able to look forward to a brighter future and integration into society.

To Your Child’s Health,

Acne is known as one of the most common and chronic skin disorders in the world today. Acne has been reported to affect millions of people. These people are of every gender, race, and age. Research has shown that it has been seen in the female population in the amount of 80 percent and the male population is shown to be 90 percent, in the teenage population. Acne is also known to occur in adults and infants as well. It normally is seen on the neck, face, back, and chest. This condition is both bothering and annoying and should be addressed, if at all possible.

There are many ways you can treat acne. One of these ways is through the use of natural acne treatments. Some of the more known natural acne treatments are with the use of lotions and cleansing agents. These are normally mainly made up of benzoyl peroxide, creams and gels that are made up of modified forms of vitamin A, and some antibiotics that are put on to the skin directly or can be taken orally.

The most basic and simple ways to prevent acne from ever developing is an acne cure diet. This is one of the easiest natural acne treatments. A diet that is based on unprocessed and whole foods is a way to prevent acne from ever developing. This is why your doctor or nutritionist may recommend that you eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruit everyday.

Research has shown that one natural remedy for acne is foods that have healthy omega 3 oils. Examples of these foods are flaxseeds and sardines. Water has been shown to be a good remedy as well. You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day. When you do this you should increase your fiber intake as well for other health reasons.

There are also some effective nutritional vitamins and supplements that work to clear up your acne. One of these is vitamin A. This has a very strong potential to be able to reduce the levels of sebum production. This should be done only under your doctor’s supervision. This can have side affects such as birth defects, decreased bone density, headaches, and even muscle and joint pain. It may be not worth the risk using this remedy.

You can avoid the use of vitamin A if you have an adequate intake of vitamin E, zinc, and beta carotene. Zinc has been shown to be a good remedy for acne. It is most helpful in the prevention of acne formation. It also has been shown to aid in the healing of blemishes and decreasing inflammation.

You can also use vitamin B6. It is an effective form of natural acne remedy. This is because vitamin B6 can help in mid-cycle and premenstrual acne. You may also want to try some herbal remedies. These remedies may include yellow dock, sarsaparilla, cleavers, and burdock. These are effective because they are powerful lymph and blood cleansers where the infection sometimes starts.

Acne can also cause problems with self esteem which is another great reason to get it treated. If you try all of these natural remedies and you still experience acne, speak with a dermatologist and tell them you would like to take care of your acne without chemical products, they should have other options for you to use.

Acid reflux is made up of chronic symptoms and or mucosal damage that are caused by the abnormal reflux of stomach contents, namely the powerful stomach acid. When the gastric contents are expelled into the esophagus, this creates discomfort, pain and possibly lasting tissue damage.

Sometimes acid reflux is a physical problem, where the lower esophageal sphincter does not effectively contain the contents of the stomach, and some cases where a hiatal hernia is a factor.

The most common symptom and complaint of those suffering from acid reflux is heartburn, which feels like a burning, stinging or even ripping type of pain around the breastbone area. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing and changes in mucosal linings of the throat. In extreme cases sufferers may develop esophageal ulcers or scarring.

In order to diagnose the condition, patients may be given a barium mixture to drink. This will help show the structure of the esophagus, sphincters and stomach in order to determine a good course of treatment.

Sometimes endoscopy is used to better examine the esophagus, stomach and relating portions of the body. The patient will usually be sedated in order to ease relaxation.

No matter which course of treatment you and your doctor decide to pursue, there are many types of food that tend to be more likely to trigger acid reflux symptoms. Avoiding or decreasing your intake of these foods may help to alleviate the situation.

Acidic, fatty and spicy foods tend to promote gastroesophageal reflux. Coffee, alcohol, vitamin C and calcium supplements are gastric acid stimulants. If you ingest these things, it is best to do so during the day or periods of increased activity. Just before bedtime would be the worst time.

Chocolate and peppermint, onions, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are known acid reflux stimulants. Milk and dairy items should be avoided at bedtime.

Eating smaller meals, elevating the head of your bed and drinking more water have all been shown to have good effects for coping with and managing acid reflux and related conditions.

Though there are a number of heartburn medications on the market, I strongly advise you to find simple solutions, such as avoiding certain foods, before you start medicating the problem. When we treat the symptoms of a disease and do nothing for the underlying causes, it’s only a matter of time before the condition has additional symptoms.

So let’s work with our bodies and do our best to ingest foods that help us and avoid ones that exacerbate our various conditions or concern areas. Start eating a little healthier, and chances are you’ll notice a difference for the better, no matter how mild or severe your version of acid reflux is.

Something you need to keep in mind and never forget is that when you exercise, you are training for life. You still may spend an hour a day in the gym, although that will still leave another 23 hours or so for your muscles to function without using any fancy equipment.

Whenever you do any type of exercise, the movement of your body during the exercise is known as the
range of motion. The more difficult the range of motion is, the more effective the exercise will be,
because your body has to work twice as hard to perform the movement.

Take for instance the classic dumbbell bicep curl. If you aren’t familiar with the exercise,
it is performed by standing up straight with your palms facing forward, and a pair of dumbbells held
down by your sides. You’ll contract your bicepsto bring the dumbbells up to your shoulder height,
then repeat the exercise as many times as you wish.

Using that same movement for exercise on a bicep curl machine, you should sit down, brace your
upper arms on a pad, grasp 2 handles that are in front of you, then perform the same movement as
above to move the handles in an upward motion.

Now, looking at the muscle contractions in this exercise, you are contracting essentially your
biceps if you are using the curl machine, and that is pretty much all you are doing. When you
use the machine you are sitting down, which will limit just how much your shoulders give. The
machine has several muscles used in this exercise limited to the biceps,as well as the
muscles in your forearms and fingers.

Most of the time, when using machine weights, you will always be limited as to what type of exercise
you can perform. You must always follow a strict procedure, which is pretty much the same with
free weights. Unlike free weights, machine weights offer a certain degree of resistance.

One of the best thing about free weights is the fact that you move a little chuck around to
select the weight you want to use. Instead of dragging it over to your exercise area,
you simply select it on the machine. When you are tired during a workout, this can be
a blessing.

A lot of people argue in the fact that free weights are the best for your body. While this
is normally true, many people out there feel that machine weights are the best. There are pros
and cons with both machines, although free weights have been around a lot longer and have
been proven time after time to achieve dramatic results.
Body builders for example, have used free weights over the years to build very impressive
bodies. If you ask most of them about machine weights, they would probably laugh at you and
tell you that you need to quit joking around.

In a nutshell, free weights will use more of your muscles than the machines do, which makes them
more effective overall. This doesn’t mean that the machines are a waste of use, as they
offer some great advantages. In some cases,it is best to stabilize the muscles that are
being used in a movement, which is where machines are the best to use.

Best regards,

Life is full of ups and downs and sometimes has a few sideways thrown in too. When things go wrong or don’t go as planned, or when something happens to throw us off balance and doubt ourselves it can be tough to deal with. After all, we all want things to go well and to end up as ‘winners’. But life will always throw challenges at us, and we can’t control everything. Nor should we try. It’s not what happens to you but what you do with what happens to you that makes the difference. Here are three easy ways that you can always come out on top.

1. Focus on Your Strengths

We’re a bunch of contradictions – sorry to break it to you. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad; sometimes hopeful, sometimes pessimistic; sometimes childish and sometimes mature. We also have a whole load of strengths and weaknesses that affect what we do and how we do it, but tend to put more focus on our weaknesses and not our strengths.

A strength is something that you do consistently well or at a near-perfect level of performance – it’s something you’re just able to do, you’re hard-wired to do it well and you get an inherent satisfaction from doing it. It could be tackling and solving complex problems, empathising with people, having a lively imagination or being able to make the perfect omelette.

Focusing on what you do well rather than what you’re not so good at makes all kinds of sense. When you look at what you’re not good at you feel bad about yourself and your ability, but when you focus on and play to your strengths you’re guaranteed to get results, and can even eliminate any negative effect your weaknesses might have.

There was a guy I worked with who hated public speaking and recognised that it was one of his weaknesses. He worked as an advertising executive and as he climbed the ladder he found he had to do more and more presentations – he’d stutter, freeze, forget his point and not perform at his best at all. But when we focused on his strengths we found that he had amazing social skills, an ability to establish great rapport with people in no time at all and had a fantastic sense of humour. Using those strengths he was able to connect easily with each person in his audience, enjoy himself a whole lot more and to deliver presentations that had fun, humour and warmth in them. He used his strengths to overwhelm his weaknesses and went from strength to strength himself.

2. Set Things Up Ahead Of Time

Sure, there will be times when you can just head into something, do brilliantly at it and get the result you were hoping for (normally if you’re playing to your strengths), but other times you might blunder forwards, wing it and not get the result you wanted. Whatever challenges or opportunities you’re facing you’ll stand a much better chance of getting a great result if you set things up to succeed ahead of time.

So what exactly do you want to happen? What solution, outcome or result would be great? Get really clear on the outcome you want from what’s facing you and how it would feel to get the outcome you’re looking for. Then start breaking it down – what can you do to set things up so that your desired outcome happens? What needs to be put in place? What will help to make what you want to happen, happen? And to ensure the best outcome, what are you willing to do?

Whatever faces you, it’s possible to get the result you want by being crystal clear about the kind of result you want and by putting effort into setting things up so that it happens. Look at this way – you’re infinitely more likely to get your most wanted result by putting time or effort into setting things up ahead of time than if you don’t. Your choice.

3. There’s No Such Thing as Losing Anyway

What’s life all about, really? Getting a good job, getting married, feeling valued, having fun? It’s about different things to different people, but to boil it down I think it’s about doing the best we can to have, do and be the best for ourselves and those we care about. Sometimes it’s a struggle and sometimes it’s a joy, but what is constant through it all is our capacity to learn, develop and grow. Humans have an unparalleled ability to learn and adapt, which is exactly why we’re able to do the best we can and find ways to have, do and be more.

That’s why everything you do takes you one step forwards and it’s only by doing one thing, then another and another that the most astounding things in our world came about. As Thomas Edison said while he was on his 207th prototype for the electric light bulb – ‘I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.’ He’s absolutely right – everything you do that doesn’t work out is another tick in another box and another step forwards, because you know one more way not to do something and what not to do next time. You’ll never get to 100% without going from 1% to 99% first.

In all that you do, whether it turns out how you wanted it to or not, there’s the capacity for learning. That means that it’s all part of the process and everything that you do and learn is an important step forwards.

There’s no such thing as losing, only learning and growing. So here’s to your continued success!”

Stress is fast becoming the biggest health problem in modern societies. Financial pressures, work pressures, family pressures – so much to do so little time to do it all! Here’s five quick ways to ease the pressure and relieve stress:

1. Make time to switch off from the daily trials and tribulations and relax for at least one hour every day. Just shut the world out and do something you enjoy. Reading, playing a musical instrument, taking a relaxing bath with music and candles (and maybe a glass of wine) are all great ways to unwind and will be extremely beneficial to your mental health.

2. If you’re dealing with a stressful situation and you have a lot on your plate then it can be very hard to find solutions. You’re caught up in the midst of a sandstorm and it is very difficult to see the way out. A good idea is to get some distance from your problems so you can gather your thoughts. If possible, take a day or even a weekend away from your usual surroundings, somewhere peaceful, and relax. Take a journal along so you can jot down any ideas. Distance away from problems can bring clarity and by relaxing, you’ll be calmer and solutions will come far easier than when you’re in the heat of battle.

3. One of the reasons people become stressed is because they are facing a change or even a number of changes to their lives. Change is a constant in life and refusing to accept change can cause stress levels to soar. When you are faced with a change, try to find the positives associated with change and embrace change instead of resisting it. Every change presents an opportunity for you to grow and there are always positives to find in even the most trying of circumstances. Change doesn’t bring stress, it’s all about how you react to change and if you react in a negative way, you will do yourself no end of harm.

4. There always seems to be an endless list of jobs that need doing: repairs around the home, paperwork, car maintenance, throwing out junk, cleaning the patio, weeding the garden – on and on and on! The more we put them off, the more the list grows and the more they contribute to your stress levels. So make a list of all of these chores and then schedule something I call a “Blitz Day”. On this day, you will rise early and spend the whole day sorting out each of these jobs. Take few breaks and only have a quick bite at lunchtime and just blitz through these irritating but necessary tasks. This will get rid of them, you’ll lower the stress they cause but more importantly, you’ll realize just how effective and industrious you can be when you apply the full force of your will to accomplish things.

5. Treat yourself to a pamper day. This is a day where you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and enjoy some stress-free time. You’ll also feel great and give your well being a huge boost. On this day, have a light workout, a swim, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, a steam room. A massage would be nice and if you have access to one, a Turkish baths will give you an invigorating experience. Try to do this at least once a month, it is an excellent stress-buster.

fact is, we can only survive for a total of 3 days without water. Water has however, been replaced in
most diets by soft drinks and other sugar sweetened
refreshments. Keep in mind that water is a healthier and necessary for leading yourself towards a better
health and longevity.

Your own personal need for water can vary greatly due to exercise, weight, and temperature. Research
has proven that over 2/3 of adults don’t get the water they need on a daily basis. By drinking water
on a regular basis you can replenish your body and keep it well hydrated and functioning as it should be.

A majority of us wait until we are thirsty before we drink water. Keep in mind, this way isn’t a
reliable gauge of the water needs for the body. By the time you are thirsty you have already lost two
of more cups of the body’s water supply. Therefore, drinking water regularly is much better than simply
waiting until you are thirsty.

It is very important that you don’t substitute beverages with alcohol and caffeine for water. The
reason behind this is that those types of beverages act as a diuretic and can cause you to lose more
weight through increased urination. You may think and feel as if you are getting more water through
these beverages, although the fact is that you are letting it go almost as fast as you consume it.

Anytime you exercise, you need more water. Due to perspiration, your body will lose quite a bit of
water. For each pound lost due to exercise, you need to drink 2 cups of water. Even when you lay down
to sleep, your body loses water. By drinking a glass or more of water before you go to sleep, you
can wake up with your body functioning as it should be.

It should become more obvious that when you are sick you’ll need more water than any other time. When
you get a cold or the flu, your body can become dehydrated quite quickly. You can help to prevent
this by drinking more water at times when you become sick.

There are several mixed opinions as to whether purified water will actually provide benefit. This
is a subject you should explore yourself as you determine the best type of water for yourself.

Always make it a habit to drink water on a daily basis. You should keep a bottle of water with you
at all times and drink it throughout the day. You should also teach yourself to drink water instead
of other beverages that don’t replenish the nutrients your body needs.
